Website: www.jewishmuseum.cz; Hours: from 9am - 5pm (check the website for current time), closed on Saturday and Jewish holidays; Admission: 250 CZK.

Jewish Ghetto Highlights

Like the rest of Europe, the Jews were discriminated against in the old time under Christian society. The first Jews in Prague probably arrived in the 10th century and scattered around the city until they were rounded up in the ghetto now known as Josefov. The name Josefov was dedicated to Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II, who lifted many restriction on the Jews: granted religious liberty and equal education, ended the dress codes and allowed them to settle outside the ghetto.

During Nazi occupation of Prague, the Jews again found themselves back in the ghetto with heavier restriction.
