IBM Encourages Czech Women into IT Field
Written by cd on January 7, 2008 – 7:00 am -
Frustrated by the low number of IT females in the Czech Republic, IBM, one of world leaders in IT industry, sets out to encourage, motivate, recruit young girls and women, and arouse their interests in computer and information technology, a field has long been male-dominated.
According to IBM, “IT is a very dynamic and fast developing area for which the most important precondition is to be willing to learn. One doesn’t have to hold a university diploma of computer science or have years of practice in the field to succeed with technology. Women are usually surprised that IT jobs can also be family-friendly because work from home is possible. Some companies, including IBM Czech Republic, are also starting to open job-share arrangements and opportunities for women to keep in touch with work via smaller projects while on maternity leave. In fact, the IT sector offers better work conditions for women in terms of equal opportunities and work-life balance than other areas of business.”

Fuzion Cafe
Written by cd on January 4, 2008 – 7:00 am -This cosy cafe was a favorite spot during my first three months here searching for jobs, waiting for my working visa, and most importantly writing for my blogs. What can beat free WIFI, cheap espresso, decent food, warm atmosphere, friendly staff right in the center of Wencelas Square and Vodickova Street, one of the most expensive and busiest area in Prague.
I usually ordered either a small espresso, a cup of tea or both and hurried upstairs where there was plenty more space, quiet and less crowded. Normally, I would see patrons working on their laptops or having private language sesson with one another. The majority of Fuzion’s customers were foreigners judged from the languages they spoke.
More Fuzion and its sandwich bar can be found at Czechoutchannel, a blog dedicated to food and drink.

Czech Christmas Beer
Written by cd on December 20, 2007 – 7:00 am -Czechs do take their beer seriously; they even cook up a special kind of beer for this holiday and organize Christmas Beer Markets.
Occasionally called svte?n piva (holiday beers), Christmas beers are brewed at higher gravities than standard Czech lagers, generally starting at 13 and heading north fast, resulting in slightly (or much) higher alcohol than normal. (Its cold here, people we need something to get the blood going.) Unfortunately, these are almost always limited editions and can be very difficult to find, either on tap or in bottles.
