80s and 90s Themed Music Bar at Lucerna
Written by cd on September 3, 2007 – 2:24 pm -
Tired of ubiquitous rock and hiphop tunes? Spend an evening out at this hidden but well-known bar located in the downtown Lucerna palace, owned Vclav Havel’s family, and dance the night away with non-stop 80s and 90s pop beats.
The dancing floor is of medium size, lit by a spinning disco ball, creating a sort of cheesy illusion. The crow comprises of mostly locals and expats, ranging from teenagers to late 20s. Its venue is not perfect, but it can be a blast to 80s music fans, one of which is of course me.
For only 20 CZK, you can free your hands by leaving your bags in a safe place.

Where to Buy Cheap Furniture in Prague
Written by cd on September 3, 2007 – 10:30 am -
I’ve recently moved to Prague 10 to a semi-furnished flat and in dire need of a small bed among other wooden luxuries.
So far I have found 4 places to scout for affordable new and second-hand furniture.
1. Ikea: No unnecessary introduction from me as most of you have already known or heard of the Ikea brand. There are two stores at two ends of metro B, Zlicin and Cerny Most. Once you get there, you can hop on free Ikea buses which will take you directly to the store. (http://www.ikea.com/cz/cs/)
2. Asko: I checked out the company’s webiste and visited one of their store and felt fairly comfortable with the prices. They had a few sofa beds I wanted to purchase; however, I will wait for a while to see if the prices drop below 5000 CZK. (http://www.asko-nabytek.cz/v2/)
Address:
Prodejna
Nkupn Centrum Europark
Nkupn 389/3; 102 00 Praha 10 - t?rboholy; Tel: 222 810 111; Hours: Mon-Sun 9.00 - 21.00.
[See map]
3. Expats.cz: This foreigner-oriented website has a decent Sale/Wanted message board where members post the items
they wish or want to sell. Most of these furniture are very cheap compared to the prices in the store, sometimes they can be even for free. Unfortunately, since I don’t have a car, I let many of such offers slip out of my hand.
4. Prague.tv: Similar to expats.cz but does not have as many listings as the other.
Wanted List
- Sofa/futon double bed
- Shoe stand

Bila’s Hiding Place in Florida?
Written by cd on September 2, 2007 – 9:48 pm -J. told me Lucie Bila, Czech popular singer, had a house (should I say villa) in Florida so that she could go to the gym without being followed by crazy Czech paparazzi. Though being an icon in her own country, she is probably able to waltz in and out around her neighborhood in the US without being recognized, thanks to Americans’ typical ignorance about pop culture other than their own.
I’ve been to Florida only once on a road trip along the Southern states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The plan original plan was to make a complete trip along the coastline of Florida; but my friend and I never made it down to Miami since we spent our lazy ass for more time than we should on the many beaches of Florida. I was unimpressed by Florida’s landscape and tourist spots, so I was a bit surprised when I first learned about Lucie’s real-estate choice here. Others might disagree with me as there seem to be many websites dedicating to tourism in this sunny state.
When I drove to Florida with friends, we followed a strict budget: sleeping for free at a friend’s house and cheap motels scattered along the coast. However, if you travel in a group and expect certain standards, choosing a vacation home might be the best option. Vacation rentals have almost the same luxury as hotels, and prices are inexpensive if there are at least 3 people.
For example, the Disney retreat in Orlando costs 99 dollars a day. There are 3 bed rooms accommodating up to 6 guests. Thus, each pays only $17/night. Not bad! Or three people staying at a luxury Apartment Jr. Suite in Miami Beach will pay 1800/month, not including tax and surcharges.
Visit goin2travel for more details and available properties in Orlando, Miami Beach and the rest of Florida vacation rentals.
Oh, in case you are curious about who is this Lucie Bila I was blabbing about, listen to one of her sweet ballad. I’ve become addicted to this song recently.
