Schengen and Illegal Expats
Written by cd on September 17, 2007 – 9:58 pm -Why should you care about Schengen Treaty? If you are a foreigner living and working “illegal” in the Czech Republic, you should be.
When the new year arrives and Czech becomes a member of Schengen, together with seven other young EU countries, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, your waltzing in and out of the Czech Republic to the borders for the covet stamp which allows you to stay and work “underground” here for three more months is soon to be numbered.
Instead or paying for a cheap rideshare or bus ticket to Germany, Austria, Poland or Slovakia, you will have to dig deeper in your pocket and lose more time as the closest non-Schengen countries are Croatia and UK. Croatia has risen to be a popular destination for Europeans as well as Czechs, so you can find easily travel deals to this region. Since Croatia is getting more and more expensive, you should welcome the possibility of traveling to Croatia’s less well-off but splendid nonetheless neighbors: Bosnia, Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro and Albania.
During my first two months here, I met a guy who lived illegally and taught English for three years before starting his adventure business. Every three months, he left the Czech Republic to get a new stamp. This little piece of information was, probably, one of the best travel advice I’d received from any one. Then a month later, I hopped on the bus to Liberec and made my way into Zittau, a small hidden city in South Eastern Germany. Was this trip mandatory? Perhaps not because my employer had already applied for my working Visa. But I really wanted to brag to my friends at home that “I also did it,” that is doing something “illegally.”
See map for current and future Schengen countries.

Worst Food, Best Food
Written by cd on September 10, 2007 – 9:38 pm -This poor blogger got himself in a German McDonald where ”German” Big Macs were served with beer. For an American, this probably seems a bit gross, no wonder he labels this initial culture shock as his worst European food experience.Well, if the sugar-obsessed Americans don’t mind slurping one biggie sodapop after another, then why should beer-craving Germans serve this “liquid bread” –as called by the Czechs–strictly at the pubs.
I’ve been to McDonald only twice in Prague and don’t think that beer is served there. If so, it is quite a tragedy for a country with the highest beer assumption in the world.
After the culture shock at this German McDonald, this blogger discovers another side of German cuisine, in mom-and-pop food stands and small restaurants, those without English menus and prepare food exactly how it should be for the locals. It’s same in the Czech Republic. I tend to avoid tourist-oriented, fancy restaurants which charges twice or three times as much for the same dishes found at local restaurants.
I highly recommend those that have the opportunity to travel through Europe to take a day trip through the countryside of any country and experience the food of the locals. For the best experience, spice up on your foreign language skills. Most importantly, bring an empty stomach and you are guaranteed to leave satisfied.
I haven’t got the opportunity to visit villages in the Czech Republic, but I recently traveled to traditional Czech villages in Romania and had a stomachful of cheap and delicious meals made from homemade and homegrown products. I will write more about this trip in future post.

Mama Mia! Premier in Prague
Written by cd on September 7, 2007 – 5:42 pm -
This international musical hit will open at Sazka Arena in Prague from October 10th to 18th, 2007.
The story in Mama Mia! is simple and rather cheesy: the reunion of three men, their ex-lover and her daughter who is, of course, daughter of one of the men. However, the magical music from one of the most celebrated musical groups in the world will be just enough to bring you a blast throughout the night.
Expect your body to be bouncing up and down (in and out of your seat) and feed moving to dingy, rhythmic tunes from sensational hits, “Dancing Queen,” Money Money Money,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “SOS” and many many more.
I saw this musical a few years ago in the US. As a student then, I bought the cheapest ticket I could find, which ended up to be at the very last row. I could not see the stage so well, but who cared, the music was all that mattered.
Seated tickets are now sold for around 1000 CZK. Quite pricey, almost the same prices as it would cost in the US, where the monthly salary is at least three times higher.
Anyway I will buy at the last minute and see if someone will sell her tickets near the day of the performance.
