Must-see Animations from Czech Animation Legend

Last weekend, J. and I went to the 42nd international film festival in Karlovy Vary. Since I arrived around noon on Saturday, I had almost no chance of buying any tickets as they all sold out. Left without any choice, we accepted the tickets for the only films available, a series of animations from Bretislav Pojar. I was not at all exciting about sitting for half an hour watching kiddie animations from some guy whose name I never heard of. However, I came out of the movie theater completely satisfied.

All of Pojar’s animations have strong social themes and leave the audience something to think about. The story plots are very simple but were told in amazingly clever and creative ways. Giggles and laughters were heard from both mature and the kiddie audience.

Bretislav Pojar was present and gave a speech before hurrying out for a photo shoot with Renee Zellweger.

Two of the shown animations are “E” and “A Drop Too Much.”

E” is a humorous piece about brain disorder and authority’s abuse of power.

A Drop Too Much” is a charming but sad puppet-modeled film about a motor biker who’s on his way to Plzen to see his sweetheart. (Part 1)

(Part 2)
