British Council - Free Internet Access and Resources About UK

Written by cd on February 2, 2007 – 12:50 pm -

I stopped by the British Council today hoping to find books, magazines and other resources in English. From the outside, the BC looked very impressive with transparent glass windows. The reception desk and surrounding area seemed decent, so I thought that I would soon discover a book paradise. So I was disappointed when the person at the information desk told me they didn’t have anything as they gave away everything to the main library.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I cruised around for 15 minutes and saw only a small section with ad fliers, booklet, magazines aimed at those who plan to move to UK.

I first learned about the British Council last year while living in Sarajevo. The BC had a wonderful collection of books, videos, cds, audios, magazines and other materials in English. It was useful as the main library in Sarajevo was burnt down along with books during the war; it has never recovered and stood ruined after 10 years have passed.

This explains the bulk of materials at the BC in Sarajevo as the city has a bigger need compared to Prague for English resources.

So I recommend the British Council only for those who need free Internet Access. Nothing else.

In a year or so, I might (little might) plan to go to the UK, then I come back here to see if I can get any useful advices and resources.
